Journal Scope
Alfa Revista de Investigación en Ciencias Agronómicas y Veterinarias is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed, diamond open access journal with continuous publication. It focuses on agronomic and veterinary sciences in the South American Altiplano (Bolivia, Peru, Chile, and Argentina). The journal specializes in extreme altitude agricultural and livestock production systems, positioning itself as the essential reference for the Andean region.
The journal accepts submissions in the following fields:
- High-Altitude Agronomy: Adapted crops (>3,500 m), frost/drought resistance, Andean agroecology, high-Andean soil management, high-altitude irrigation technology, plant physiology, Andean biocontrol agents, and soil, drought, climate, or pest resilience.
- Andean Veterinary Medicine: Pathology, zootechnics, preventive medicine, animal reproduction, pharmacology, and their impact on food value chains. Covers camelid health (alpaca, llama, vicuña), high-altitude parasitosis (sarcoptic mange), infectious diseases, and animal welfare in hypoxia.
- Mountain Zootechnics: Camelid genetic improvement, fiber production (alpaca), high-altitude animal nutrition, high-Andean pastoral systems.
- Climate Change and Adaptation: Resilience strategies, agricultural and livestock adaptive measures, climatic risk management, and extreme event prediction.
- Food Security: Sustainable and traditional production systems, rural nutrition, food sovereignty, and Andean value chains.
The journal is Open Access. It is published in PDF format with continuous publication. The editorial team defines the order, volume, and issue number for approved manuscripts.
Article Types
Submitted manuscripts must conform to one of these typologies. A template is available at: https://revistaalfa.org/public_html/public/journals/1/plantilla-articulo-original-en.docx
Research Article: Original, unpublished work presenting novel knowledge, findings, theories, or methodologies that advance agronomic sciences and veterinary medicine. Length up to 8,000 words (including all manuscript sections, excluding bibliographic references).
Minimum required elements:
- Title: Spanish and English (maximum 15 words).
- Abstract: Spanish and English (maximum 250 words).
- Keywords: Spanish and English.
- Introduction: Presents objectives, scope, and originality of the text; may include broader theoretical development if justified.
- Methodology: Presentation of the research's methodological aspects.
- Results: Descriptive presentation of findings.
- Discussion: Interpretation of findings, linkage with other authors' findings, comparison of results with current theoretical discussion, considering main coincidences and differences.
- Conclusions: Synthesizes results, contributions, and objective fulfillment.
- About: Refers to mandatory declarations of authorship, funding, conflicts of interest, ethical considerations, and open science objects that must be included at the manuscript's end, before bibliographic references.
- References: At least 30 bibliographic sources. Approximately 60–70% of works are expected to rigorously integrate references and theoretical frameworks from literature indexed in recognized databases (Scopus and WoS). These percentages are guiding criteria for reviewers to assess the scope, visibility, and scientific quality of manuscripts.
Review Article: Of interest to animal reproduction and agronomy fields; submitted by direct invitation from the editorial board, though authors may also submit review manuscripts. Length between 8,000 and 9,000 words.
Case Reports: Detailed descriptions of unusual clinical situations, atypical disease presentations, or cases. Structure: introduction, case presentation, discussion, and conclusions. Manuscripts include 15 to 25 references and must meet ethical requirements for mandatory informed consent from key informants, accompanied by guaranteed protection of identity and confidentiality. Length must be between 3,000 and 5,000 words.
Brief Communications: Must report on or relate to new techniques involved in reproductive biology. Maximum length of 2,000 words, including reference list, and only two panel figures and two tables.
Conference Proceedings: The journal publishes full original articles, abstracts, and workshops when presented at Animal Reproduction Academic Society conferences supported by the journal.
Letters to the Editor: Letters may present clarifications, debate questions, or other observations on content published in Alfa Revista de Investigación en Ciencias Agronómicas y Veterinarias, as well as comments on specific topics in both areas. Limit is 1,500 words. References are mandatory for letters to the editor.
Editorial Guidelines
Language: Articles must be submitted in Spanish or English. All articles include title, keywords, and abstract in both languages. If the original is in English, these elements must also be in Spanish.
Article Information
This information is stated in the Article Application Letter (https://revistaalfa.org/public_html/public/journals/1/carta-postulacion-en.docx).
Funding: Authors must specify research funding sources for the submitted article, including project title, funding entity or person, and project code or identification number.
- Format: Granting agency name, project code, and year.
Conflict of Interest Statement: Authors must declare any conflicts of interest regarding the submitted article, between authors, with the journal, the publishing entity, and funding entities. Similarly, absence of conflicts must also be explicitly stated: "The author declares no conflicts of interest." Each author must make this declaration.
Ethical approval: Indicate the name of the granting committee, code, date, and online link if available. If the research nature does not require ethical approval, state it.
Acknowledgements: Authors may optionally acknowledge individuals (ensuring these individuals have authorized use of their names) or entities that assisted in article development by providing technical, operational, or financial resources.
Open Science Objects: Fostering Transparency and Reusability in Research
To ensure maximum research transparency, reproducibility, and impact, this journal actively promotes Open Science principles. Authors are required to identify and provide access to all relevant open science objects supporting their manuscript, following these guidelines:
- Identification and Access: Information supporting reported results and findings must be hosted on open access platforms, preferably trusted thematic or institutional repositories. Each open science object must be clearly identified and linked in the manuscript using persistent identifiers. DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is the preferred identifier. In its absence, direct URLs to open access repositories are accepted.
- FAIR Principles: Open science objects must be shared under licenses permitting responsible reuse, independent verification of findings, and maximum dissemination. Authors are urged to adhere to FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) to ensure their research inputs are easily findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable by the scientific community.
- Purpose and Ethical Considerations: The main objective is for research inputs (e.g., datasets, protocols, software) to be usable, validated, and replicated, contributing to knowledge advancement. It is imperative to safeguard privacy, anonymity, and strictly comply with all applicable personal data protection regulations. Authors are responsible for ensuring shared data are properly anonymized and comply with relevant ethical consents.
